Police responding to a call of shots fired in Lakeview late Tuesday found a 35-year-old man behind the wheel of a car. He had been shot once in the head and shoulder.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital in stable condition,

The man told Nassau County officers he had driven a friend to nearby Park Side Avenue at 10:25 p.m., police said. He said once the friend got out of the car, another man approached, brandished a pistol and began shooting, police said.

Police said the friend fled, as did the gunman. The victim drove to Woodfield Road, where the responding officers found him.

Police said the shooting is being investigated and could not offer a motive.

Police described the shooter as about 6 feet tall, skinny, with dreadlocks and a mustache. Police said he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack.

Anyone with information regarding the assault is being asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous.
