A man was shot in the stomach and seriously wounded Wednesday afternoon in Roosevelt, police said.

Nassau County police are searching for the assailants - three men who fled in a red Dodge Avenger.

The incident occurred on Prospect Avenue at 3:08 p.m., police said.

Police were alerted through the ShotSpotter system, which pinpoints the sound of gunfire with sensors. The device sends the locations of gunshots directly to computers as well as to police dispatchers.

Police said the victim, whose identity has not been released, and three men got into a dispute - and one of them pulled out a handgun and fired, striking the victim in the stomach area.

"There was some type of dispute at that location and, following that dispute, we have an unknown subject who fired at least five shots in the vicinity of the victim," said Det. Lt. Stephen Palmer of the First Squad detectives.

The reason for the dispute was unknown yesterday, Palmer said, adding that police have not been able to interview the victim and are searching for witnesses.

A friend of the victim took him to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
