Nassau police are searching for two men who robbed or tried to rob banks in separate incidents Tuesday.

The crimes are not believed to be related, and police said no one was hurt. Police said at 10:55 a.m. in Bethpage, a man entered the Chase Bank at 4276 Hempstead Tpke., where he gave the teller a note demanding cash and then verbally demanded it.

But other bank employees realized the man was trying to rob the bank, and he wasn't given any money. The suspect then left through the parking lot and was last seen heading toward Randal Drive, police said. Police said there were five employees and one customer present during the attempted robbery.

That suspect is described as being between 35 and 40 years old, 6 feet tall and wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap, sunglasses, a black baggy shirt and dark-colored cargo pants.

Three hours later in West Hempstead, police said a man entered the Capital One Bank at 611 Hempstead Tpke. and verbally demanded cash from one of the tellers. After he was given an unknown amount of money, police said the suspect left in a light-colored car, heading east toward Hempstead Turnpike. There were five employees and one customer in the bank during that robbery, police said.

The second suspect was described as in his mid-40s, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a medium build and wearing a dark T-shirt, sunglasses and a New York Yankees baseball cap.

Despite the similarity in dress, police said they don't think there is any connection between the two crimes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
