Freeport Village police on Wednesday night arrested two men, one of whom had been shot in both legs, on criminal gun possession charges.

Village police said they got a call at about 8:30 p.m. reporting gunshots in the area of Smith Street and West Merrick Road. Responding officers saw a vehicle, which had fled the scene, headed west on Atlantic Avenue, police said.

When officers stopped the 1994 Toyota Camry in the 400 block of Atlantic Avenue, they found two men and a loaded semiautomatic handgun inside, Nassau County police said in a news release.

The Freeport officers took the two from the car -- the driver, Alex Valerio-Fernandez, 22, of 148 Pine St., and a passenger, Albhert Corsino, 17, of 150 S. Main St. During the arrest officers saw that Corsino had been shot in the right calf and left thigh and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Both suspects were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court, Hempstead, on charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
