A driver was arrested after he ran over the foot of a Nassau County police officer who had just issued him a traffic ticket, police said.

After injuring the officer in Bethpage on Wednesday, Nicholas Tsarkalis, 41, of East Setauket, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, police said in a Thursday news release.

Tsarkalis, after receiving a traffic summons at about 3:15 p.m., "abruptly turned his steering wheel" and his vehicle re-entered the roadway and hit the officer's foot, police said.

The officer was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

Tsarkalis, of 31 Detmer Rd., will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday.
