Police: Valley Stream woman hit, killed by truck

A woman was struck and killed by a truck as she walked across South Central Avenue in Valley Stream early Friday, Nassau County police said.

Suzanne Fairhurst, 69, of Valley Stream was crossing the roadway, east to west, at West Merrick Road at about 8 a.m. when she was hit by a truck making a left turn, police said.

The 27-year-old driver of a 2013 International truck was turning from westbound West Merrick Road when he hit Fairhurst, police said.

Fairhurst sustained a head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police investigating the accident reported no criminality. The driver remained at the scene, and his truck was impounded for a safety check.

Because of the police investigation, the road was closed until about 11:30 a.m.
