Police: Vandals try to pry open Elmont church poor boxes
Nassau County police said Monday they are investigating a burglary at an Elmont church.
A maintenance worker at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, 1500 DePaul St., locked and secured the church Sunday at 9 p.m., police said in a news release. When he returned Monday morning, the worker noticed someone had broken a basement boiler-room window and entered the church.
A free-standing poor box and wall-mounted poor box were pried, but the burglar did not open them, police said. A church desk also was damaged.
Fourth Squad detectives said anyone with information on the burglary could call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
