Police: Woman beat girlfriend's son with belt
A Rockland County woman is under arrest, charged with hitting her girlfriend's 6-year-old son with a leather belt Monday at a home in Valley Stream after she learned the boy had misbehaved at school, police said.
Nassau County police said the boy told his teachers Tuesday he had been hit and the school notified Child Protective Services.
The boy was taken to a hospital for evaluation, then released to his mother, police said.
Detectives then arrested Aja Lane, 30, of Creekside Circle, Spring Valley, charging her with two counts of second-degree assault and fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon. She was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said Lane took the belt and struck the boy on the back, arms and chest, causing contusions. Police did not identify the child because of his age.
The incident occurred Monday at 7 p.m., police said.
