The North Hempstead Housing Authority last night withdrew an application for a 48-unit affordable senior housing complex in Port Washington.

The move follows last month's contentious public hearing before the Town of North Hempstead Town Council at which residents cited concerns about traffic, lowered property values and loss of space once used as a park.

The property is near Port Washington Boulevard and Harbor Road.

Authority chairman Matthew Cuomo said an April meeting with community leaders had been scheduled in effort to find a better location.

"We don't do this apart from the community," Cuomo said. "We do this as part of the community."

Also at the meeting, the council voted to expand the Great Neck Garbage District to include Harbor Hills and University Gardens.

Homeowners in those communities currently must negotiate garbage contracts individually, Supervisor Jon Kaiman said.

The district will maintain the same level of services.

The board also changed a law passed last year that limited movie companies to filming between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. Now, permit applicants can work with the town clerk, supervisor and the councilor to extend the hours of a shoot.

"This makes it more flexible," town Councilor Fred L. Pollack said.

The board voted to change the fees for filming in public areas and retained the daily fee of $500, which had included two vehicles and three crew members. It removed additional daily fees for extra crew members and vehicles, which had added $50 for each additional crew member and $100 for each additional vehicle.
