Possible flooding Tuesday, snow Thursday
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said a flood watch may be issued for parts of Long Island on Tuesday and said we're in for a wet, possibly snow-laden week.
The agency said moderate to heavy rainfall will develop Tuesday afternoon and a second area of low pressure Thursday could bring "significant snowfall."
Forecasters are predicting a 100 percent chance of "heavy rain" Tuesday night and a 90 percent chance of snow Thursday. However, moderate temperatures are expected throughout the week, with a high of 39 degrees predicted Wednesday, and a high of 38 Thursday, which could temper accumulations and turn snow into sleet and slush.
The best chance for significant snowfall is in the interior of the Island, forecasters said. Coastal areas will likely see a mix of rain and snow.
Forecasters said less than an inch of snow is possible in many areas.
Still, the storm will bring plenty of miserable weather, forecasters said.
"The details of this event will be determined by the exact track and strength" of the low-pressure area, a hazardous weather outlook statement said. "Just a small deviation in this track will have a significant impact on the forecast."
Tuesday night, gusting winds of up to 20 mph were expected, with winds in the low teens Wednesday and gusting to more than 21 mph Thursday.
And the "potential for urban and poor drainage flooding" Tuesday was very high, according to a hazardous weather outlook statement issued Tuesday at 7:48 a.m.
Minor coastal flooding during high tides is also expected across western Long Island Sound, forecasters said.
