A Bethpage postal worker was sentenced to 37 months in prison for stealing government property and tax evasion, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Gregory Giordani, who was convicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Central Islip, also was ordered to make nearly $489,000 in restitution and to work with the IRS to satisfy his tax liability, the agency said. After he is released from prison, Giordani will have three years of supervision, the IRS said.

Giordani of Queens was a technician in the United States Postal Service's Bethpage mail handling facility, where he used the government's procurement system to order computer parts, including ink, officials said.

He then sold some of these items on eBay and failed to report the income on his tax returns from 2006 to 2008, the IRS said.

Giordani stole from the post office for almost seven years, according to court papers.

In March, Giordani pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion and one count of theft of government property, totaling more than $480,000, officials said.
