Power problem delays Port Wash. trains

The Long Island Rail Road said a Long Island Power Authority problem has affected service into and out of Port Washington on Tuesday, causing delays and cancellations.

The railroad said the incident affected an interlocking near the Port Washington station. It said that issue delayed by 13 minutes the 7:36 a.m. train from Port Washington, due to arrive in Penn Station at 8:11 a.m.

The 7:46 a.m. Port Washington train, due to arrive in Penn at 8:35 a.m., was canceled.

Officials said customers were to be accommodated by the 8:08 a.m. Port Washington train due in Penn at 8:44 a.m.

However, the 8:18 a.m. Port Washington train to Penn also was canceled. The 7:55 a.m. train from Penn Station to Port Washington was held at Great Neck station as a result.

A LIPA outage map showed no power outages in the area at 7:45 a.m. or 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The official LIPA website showed 13 total power outages in Nassau, 12 of them in Roslyn Harbor. There were 106 outages in Suffolk at 8 a.m.

A LIPA spokesman Scott Garver said there was a brief interruption of service to a feeder cable supplying power to the railroad. He said the cause of the interruption is under investigation.

A railroad spokesman told Newsday the outage began affecting trains at 7:27 a.m. and said the situation was resolved at 8:06 a.m., but said residual affects caused additional delays.

In addition to the issues in Port Washington, the LIRR said the 7:08 a.m. train from Far Rockaway to Penn Station was operating 22 minutes late because of equipment trouble.
