A $1 million second-prize winning Powerball ticket for Wednesday's drawing was sold at a Hempstead gas station store, the New York Lottery announced Thursday.

The ticket was sold at the Sunoco APlus mini market at 665 Peninsula Blvd. No one has yet stepped forward to claim the winning ticket.

"We were very surprised," said Rob Hakobjanyan, manager of the mini-market. "We are trying to figure out who it is. I have been asking people to check their tickets to make sure they didn't throw it out."

Hakobjanyan said he hopes the winner is a frequent customer.

"Hopefully it's a customer that comes in here all the time," he said. " … It would be better if it was a regular customer."

The market previously sold a $3 million scratch-off ticket seven years ago, he said.

The Powerball drawings are broadcast every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.

The state lottery calculates that Powerball has contributed $3.59 billion in fiscal year 2020-21 to help support education.
