Queens man sentenced for fatal shooting
A Queens man who was convicted of killing a man who tried to dance with his girlfriend at an Elmont nightclub will serve 25 years to life for the shooting, a Nassau County judge ruled Wednesday.
Sandino Campbell, 28, of Jamaica, was convicted in July of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for killing Galy Fortune, 47, of Valley Stream.
"Do the best you can do for my brother because I loved my brother so much," Fortune's sister, Mana Lamour, of Baldwin, asked Judge Alan Honorof.
Campbell's lawyer, Greg Madey, of Mineola, said his client maintains his innocence and plans to appeal.
"This was a very senseless crime and a very callous act," prosecutor Zena Abdi said in court. "It really ripped a family apart."
Campbell got into an argument with Fortune over his girlfriend at Café Moments nightclub in Elmont in May 2009, Abdi said. Both men were escorted from the bar, she said.
Campbell and his girlfriend left through the back door. Fortune walked out the front, Abdi said.
As Fortune was walking away, Campbell shot at him from his car, striking him below the ribs, she said. Campbell's girlfriend, who was in the car, and a second bystander testified against Campbell at trial, lawyers said.
Fortune, who was married and had a baby, was pronounced dead at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.
Campbell fled and remained on the lam in California for nearly a year.
In June 2010, Nassau County Det. James Hendry and Det. Christopher Ferro learned that Campbell was in Los Angeles after his arrest there on unrelated charges, prosecutors said at the time.
The two detectives brought Campbell back to Long Island on a governor's warrant, prosecutors said.
