Rain - finally - sweeps through Long Island
Thunderstorms bringing wind and rain rolled through Long Island Monday, taking the edge off the heat and humidity that has been around for days.
The storms are creating a high risk of strong rip currents and rough surf at the ocean beaches, according to the National Weather Service, which warned all swimmers to heed the advise of lifeguards and not to swim in unprotected areas from Queens beaches to the East End.
The rain brings welcome relief from a series of hot and humid days, as well as no significant rainfall since June 22, forecasters said.
Long Island MacArthur and Brookhaven airports hit 93 degrees on Sunday, and Saturday's temperatures hovered at about 91 degrees.
Tuesday should be hot and sunny, with a high of 88 degrees and a chance of thunderstorms in the evening.
