New Cassel man charged in church, home break-ins, cops say

A New Cassel man was charged with burglary and trespassing in break-ins at a church and a residence, Nassau County police said Tuesday.
Raleigh Maddox, 44, of 15 Third Ave., was arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead on charges he took $12,000 worth of audio/visual equipment from the Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church on Aug. 31 and then broke into a home on Monday, police said.
Both the church at 859 Prospect Ave. and the house on Second Avenue are in New Cassel.
Nassau County District Court Judge Joy Watson set Maddox's bail at $25,000 bond or cash, which he had not posted as of Tuesday afternoon. He is due back in court Thursday.
He was arrested Monday hiding inside the house, after a witness notified police, according to a news release.
Maddox gave police a fictitious name, but they were able to identify him by his fingerprints, police said.
He later admitted to taking the electronics from the church, a department spokesman said.
He is charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal trespass, false personation and violation of parole.
