Cops: New Hyde Park man drove drunk with girl, 6, in car

A New Hyde Park man violated Leandra's Law when he was driving drunk early Saturday with a 6-year-old girl in his vehicle, Nassau County police said.
Ravinder Chopra, 50, is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a felony; endangering the welfare of a child; driving while intoxicated; and driving with tinted rear side windows.
Chopra, of 50 Jones St., is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Chopra stopped at sobriety checkpoint near the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and New Hyde Park Road at about 12:37 a.m., and police "smelled a strong odor of alcohol and observed glassy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech," according to a news release.
He was arrested and the girl, a family friend, was released to her mother at the scene, police said.
Under Leandra's Law, driving drunk with a passenger age 15 or younger is a felony. The law was passed in 2009 after Leandra Rosado, 11, was killed in an DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed in Manhattan.
