Human skeletal remains were found Friday afternoon in Rockville Centre beneath the collapsed tent of an abandoned encampment in the woods, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Rockville Centre Village police officers made the discovery about 1:45 p.m. following a 911 call reporting possible human remains in the woods southwest of Peninsula Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue, the police department wrote in a news release. It wasn’t until nightfall — hours after the 911 call — that county police officers were seen removing what appeared to be human remains.

The remains are with the medical examiner's office, according to the release, which did not say who made the 911 call. Nor did the release say how long the remains might have been there, the possible identity of the person or the circumstances of the death.

An investigation by the county police homicide squad remains unfinished.
