A stretch of the Long Island Expressway in Riverhead will be closed Monday and Tuesday as part of a $3.4 million repair project, the state Department of Transportation said.

The closures are overnight, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., to both westbound and eastbound traffic between Edwards Avenue, Exit 71, and Old Country Road/County Road 58, Exit 73, the agency said in a news release.

All traffic will be diverted to a detour route utilizing Edwards Avenue and NY Route 25.

The closures "are needed to temporarily lift the LIE Bridge over the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to perform structural improvements as part of a $3.4 million repair project to preserve the integrity of the bridge and maintain the safety of motorists and LIRR riders," the release said.

Motorists can get more information by calling 511 or visiting 511NY.org, the state's official traffic and travel information source. Travel information also is at informny.com and on hand-held communication devices at informny.mobi.
