Motorists traveling in the towns of North Hempstead, Oyster Bay and Smithtown may need to allow extra travel time starting Monday as a road repaving project gets underway on Route 25A, according to state transportation officials.

Travel lanes on Route 25A between Glen Cove Road in Greenvale and Route 106 in East Norwich, and on North Country Road between Edgewood Avenue and Moriches Road in St. James will be shifted or closed in some cases between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

In most cases, one lane will be available in each direction, officials said in a release, though some stretches may be cut down to a single lane with alternating traffic. There may also be temporary closures of all lanes. Parking along North Country Road will be prohibited.

The roads were damaged by last winter's deep freeze and the closures are part of a $13.9 million state repaving project.

The closures are expected to last until Thursday for North Hempstead Turnpike and Friday for North Country Road, when crews will begin to replace the top layer of pavement between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
