A water main broke in Levittown Monday night, prompting police to close off some streets, authorities said.

The break at Orchid Road and Skimmer Lane was reported about 5:30 p.m., said William Fogarty, plant manager for the Town of Hempstead's water department. He said repair crews were on site.

Nassau police said they shut down some streets because of flooding, but did not have details on the roads affected.

"We've had worse water main breaks than this," Fogarty said. "It's just affecting people because it's dinner time."

Temperatures were above freezing, but Fogarty said precautions are being taken against water icing on the roads. "We have sanders standing by, but there should be no danger at this time."

Other details were not available.
