Two motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after they crashed into each other in Rockville Centre early Saturday, a village spokeswoman said.

Two people were injured, one seriously, in the crash on Merrick Road near Sunrise Highway at about 5 a.m., said spokeswoman Julie Scully. It was unclear Saturday afternoon how many people were in each vehicle or whether the two injured were the drivers, other passengers or a combination of either, Scully said.

Both cars were impounded and the brakes were being tested, Scully said. While the crash is under investigation by local police, it is believed that one of the drivers was going the wrong way, Scully said.

The names, ages and genders of the drivers were not made available Saturday afternoon.
