A South Hempstead man was arrested early Saturday after he robbed his former girlfriend during a meeting to exchange custody of their child two months earlier, police said.

Nassau County Police said Romell Richardson, 20, of 597 Irene St., got into an argument with the former girlfriend when they met at the corner of Irene Street and Webber Avenue to exchange custody of their 18-month-old child on Aug. 19 at about 2:50 p.m. The woman told police that Richardson pulled out a small handgun and took her wallet and cellphone, then fled.

The child was left in the woman's custody and no one was injured, police said.

Detectives found Richardson early Saturday on Grand Avenue in Baldwin and arrested him at about 1:10 a.m.

In addition to the robbery, police also said he violated an order of protection during the August incident. Richardson was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree criminal contempt, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.
