Roosevelt man held in gun possession
Cops canvassing for a pair of Chinese-food-delivery robbers in Uniondale haven't caught the thieves -- but they did arrest an unconnected bicyclist for gun possession after they noticed a bulge under his clothes, Nassau police said.
The bicyclist, Lon Carey 31, of 53 Lincoln Ave. in Roosevelt, resembled the description given of the food delivery thieves. So officers stopped him Thursday morning, just after midnight, on Park Avenue and Park Place.
Investigators determined that Carey wasn't the robber, but they locked him up for possessing the gun, a .25 caliber handgun, police said.
He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of criminal weapon possession in the second and third degrees.
As for the robbers, detectives said they ordered food to be delivered to a home on Braxton Street, then jumped out of the bushes when the deliveryman arrived, threatening him with a gun, around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
They took cash from his pocket, and fled with the money, the soda and the food.
The deliveryman followed the suspects in his car and called the police.
Cops found the gun in the rear yard of a home on Fenimore Avenue, where the suspects were seen running.
The first suspect, who had the handgun, is described as 18 to 20 years old, 6-foot-2 and about 220 pounds. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, blue shorts, black sneakers and a white mask. The second suspect is about 16 years old, about 150 pounds, wearing dark clothing and dark sneakers.
Cops asked anyone with information to call their tip line at 800-244-TIPS.
