Roosevelt man pleads not guilty in ShotSpotter arrest
Odell Wiggins, 34, of Roosevelt pleaded not guilty Saturday to weapons charges in connection with the firing of a weapon Thursday.
ShotSpotter, technology that triangulates the sound of gunfire, was used to locate and arrest Wiggins, who Nassau County police said fired a round from a revolver into the air.
The ShotSpotter system, in place in Roosevelt since July of last year, pinpointed the gunshot sound as it was fired Thursday at 10:52 a.m. Police responded to the identified location, 72 Monroe Ave., Roosevelt, and interviewed witnesses, First Squad Det. Sgt. Curt Beaudry said.
Police recovered the Rohm .38-caliber revolver at the scene and determined that Wiggins, who lives at that address, fired a round into the air, Beaudry said. Wiggins did not have a permit for the weapon, Beaudry said.
The next day, police arrested Wiggins where he works. Police would not disclose Wiggins' place of employment.
Wiggins was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment.
He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held in lieu of $15,000 bail at his arraignment Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.
