Nassau County homicide detectives have extradited a suspect who had fled to New Jersey, charging him with second-degree murder in a death that took place last month during an argument behind a deli in Roosevelt, police said.

Alcides Diaz-Fernandez, 32, of 88 Bennett Ave., Roosevelt, faces arraignment on a second-degree murder charge Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Detectives say he killed Jose Romero, 31, who suffered "cuts and lacerations" in the altercation at 7:10 p.m. June 3. Romero was taken that night to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead two hours later.

The Nassau Homicide Squad, the U.S. Marshal's New York-New Jersey Task Force and a Homeland Security Investigations Unit worked together in the arrest of Diaz-Fernandez in Essex County, N.J., police said.
