Roslyn Harbor bans residents' caring for pets unlicensed to them

Roslyn Harbor residents sheltering numerous dogs for a fee may no longer do so, after village trustees passed a local law banning “unlicensed shelters.”

“It’s not safe for a villager to have what amounts to an unofficial shelter in their backyard,” Mayor Louis Badolato said.

Village code previously allowed boarding of dogs for a small fee, which is no longer permitted. Residents caring for pets that are not registered to them are allowed to do so on an “occasional basis,” after obtaining permission from the village.

The local law is designed to “preserve the relationship between a dog and his master”, and also reduce “annoyance and damage” caused by unlicensed sheltering.
