The American flag that usually flies outside the Port Washington post office was briefly replaced with a Russian flag over the weekend, officials said.

Sometime between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, what appeared to be a Russian flag was raised on the flagpole outside the building, according to Port Washington Police Chief James Salerno.

An employee noticed the foreign flag Monday and it was immediately reported to the United States Postal Inspection Service, a USPS spokesman said.

“We in the Postal Service appreciate the seriousness of this apparent act of vandalism and we share the concerns of the community of Port Washington regarding this recent incident involving our flag,” the spokesman said in a statement.

The Postal Inspection Service is currently investigating the incident, according to the spokesman.
