An 85-year-old man was struck and killed while trying to cross Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont Thursday night, Nassau County police said.

The South Floral Park man was crossing south at 1420 Hempstead Tpke. about 7 p.m. when a Pennsylvania man, 28, driving a 1997 Plymouth hit him, police said.

The elderly man was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m.

Police said there was no apparent criminality with the accident and that the vehicle passed all inspections at the scene.
