A man who said he was shopping for a new cell phone instead robbed the salesman at a T-Mobile store in Herricks Thursday evening after claiming he had a gun, police said.

At about 5 p.m., the salesman at the Hillside Avenue store was assisting a man who pretended to be a customer, but the man then announced he had a gun - and demanded cash.

Police said the salesman, 20, complied, giving the man cash from the register.

But then, the salesman turned to look for a panic button and was struck in the head by the assailant. The victim fell to the floor as the robber ran off, police said.

The victim refused medical treatment at the scene. Police did not say how much was taken.
