Freeport police are investigating a crash involving a school bus Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the scene just before 3 p.m. on West Merrick Road, the Freeport Police Department told Newsday. There did not appear to be any major injuries, police said. It was not clear if students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

About 3:45 p.m., the bus, which appeared to sustain front-end damage, and a silver four-door sedan, which bore a smashed in front, a broken windshield and a discarded passenger door, remained at the intersection of West Merrick Road and Long Beach Road.

Oceanside-based Guardian Bus Company — the name appears on the side of the bus — did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Guardian services Freeport Public Schools, according to the district's website.

The Freeport school district was investigating the incident but could not immediately provide details Friday afternoon.
