About half a dozen kindergartners were pulled from a school bus that fell into a huge pothole Wednesday in Levittown, police said.

The hole in Red Maple Drive near Wantagh Avenue was caused by a water main break, Nassau police said.

The kindergartners were safely transferred to another bus, police said. The driver was unharmed.

The students were from the Levittown school district, Superintendent Herman Sirois said.

The hole was about 4 feet wide and 5 feet deep. The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. when the children were on their way to class.

Jake Mauro, 5, was among the kindergartners seated inside police cars to await the next bus, said his father, Tom Mauro of Levittown.

"He was thrilled about being in the police car," Tom Mauro said. With John Valenti
