A social media threat that prompted a beefed up police presence at Hicksville's public high and middle schools was directed at campuses in Virginia and Ohio, the Hicksville district superintendent said Thursday.

"The good news is the inappropriate post was not about Hicksville" schools, said Superintendent Marianne Litzman in a Facebook post.

"Working late into the night, Nassau County Police Department was able to confirm the post showing a gun was a stock photo from Google images" and the Hicksville school "was in reference to a middle school in Fairfax County, Virginia. A similar post was investigated in Ohio as well.," Litzman said in the Facebook post.

A district robocall to parents on Wednesday night informed them of the additional Nassau police officers at both Hicksville High School and Hicksville Middle School, according to board president Phil Heckler.

He said authorities were looking for whoever posted a photograph of a 9 mm handgun on social media.

"We’re not sure what the source is," Heckler said.

Nassau police would not comment Thursday morning, although a police vehicle was seen outside the middle school Thursday morning.

In October, two days of online threats — also later determined to have no local connection — led to an enhanced Nassau police presence at the Valley Stream Central High School District's four campuses.

Social media threats allegedly made against a high school in the Midwest led to the safety measures at Valley Stream Central High School, officials said at the time.

Three juveniles were arrested, accused of directing a social media threat to Central High School in St. Joseph, Missouri, the city police department said in October.

The common name of the high school, however, prompted copycat cases and various lockdowns from New York to Kansas to Louisiana to Texas, according to the Valley Stream Central High School District and media reports.
