A man was declared dead on Thursday evening after being found in need of "live-saving measures" on the shoulder of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The death of the man, age 26, was by suicide, Det. Joseph Oginski, a department spokesman, said Monday.

Officers had tried to resuscitate the man after they were dispatched to the expressway just south of Old Country Road around 5:35 p.m., the department wrote in a news release, which said he was brought to a hospital and a physician there declared him dead.

The northbound expressway was closed between Exits 9 and 10, in the vicinity of Plainview and Bethpage, for at least three hours on Thursday night during a police investigation.

His name has not been released.
