A search continued Monday for one of two pit bulls that mauled a woman in North Merrick last week, Nassau police said.
Police have been looking for the dog since Shashi Sharma, 62, of North Merrick, was mauled Thursday morning as she walked outside a senior center near her home.
Sharma remains in critical but stable condition at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, a spokeswoman said Monday.
The woman was walking along Meadowbrook Road, police said, when she was attacked by two pit bulls. She suffered deep cuts to both legs and her left arm and is recovering from surgery, according to the hospital.
After the attack, police shot and killed one of the pit bulls, but the other, described as tan with a white belly, escaped.
A police spokesman said Monday that staff from the Town of Hempstead animal-control unit also is aiding police.
Police released a photograph Friday of the two dogs taken from video surveillance cameras at the senior center and are urging anyone who might have seen the dog to call 911.
