Cops: 2 troopers hurt after pursuit on Southern Parkway
Two New York State troopers were injured early Sunday in an accident that happened while they were arresting a driver after a brief pursuit on the Southern State Parkway in North Valley Stream, police said.
The troopers pursued a car driven by Derrick Douglas, 39, of Brentwood, at about 2 a.m. After stopping the driver, police said the troopers tried to arrest him, but he resisted.
While they were taking Douglas into custody, an eastbound Mercedes-Benz struck the back of a Toyota pickup truck, State Police said. The pickup truck then struck one trooper and Douglas’ car. The second trooper was hurt while dodging the pickup truck, State Police said.
The troopers and Douglas “sustained non-life-threatening injuries, [and] were treated and released from the hospital,” police said.
Douglas was arrested on resisting arrest and drug charges. Additional charges are pending, State Police said.
The incident happened east of North Fletcher Avenue, Exit 14. The investigation after the accident closed the parkway for hours, until midmorning, between exits 14 and 15, police said.
