Long Beach city police are looking for the gunman who shot another man outside police headquarters early Sunday.

Sgt. Eric Cregeen said the victim, a 22-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital, where he faced surgery for bullet wounds to the lower back and behind the right knee and was listed in critical condition.

A dispatcher at police headquarters on West Chester Street thought he heard gunshots at about 2:30 a.m. and called a unit to patrol the area, Cregeen said.

Moments later, the victim walked into headquarters and reported he had been shot.

Police canvassed the area, looking for suspects, Cregeen said, and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital by emergency personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department.

Cregeen also said police found a bullet hole in the glass of an entrance door to headquarters.
