The Massapequa Fire Department is investigating the cause of a small fire in the Sunrise Mall Wednesday morning that resulted in minor smoke damage, the mall's manager said.

"We had a small fire in a vacant space inside the mall," said Chris Brivo, manager of the Sunrise Mall in East Massapequa. Brivo said the fire, which started at about 9:15 a.m., was extinguished by the Massapequa Fire Department without incident.

Only a few workers were in the mall at the time, he said, and they were evacuated. The mall then opened at 10 a.m., its regular time, he said.

Brivo said mall staff is cooperating with the fire department investigation. There were no injuries.
