Southern State Parkway crash leaves child, 4, in critical condition, state police say

A 4-year-old passenger was in critical condition after the driver of an SUV struck trees off the westbound Southern State Parkway near Exit 20 in Baldwin on Wednesday afternoon, state police said.
Troopers removed the child and driver from the 2006 Nissan Sentra that had struck the trees, police said in a news release. The child was taken to a hospital.
Westbound lanes on the Southern State Parkway in the vicinity were closed from about 2 to 4 p.m., state police said.
The investigation is ongoing, and state police ask witnesses to call 631-756-3300.
