State transportation officials Tuesday announced that nighttime closures are underway in segments of travel lanes on the Northern State Parkway in Nassau to make way for road improvements.

A westbound lane is scheduled to be shut down on the parkway near Route 135/Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway or Exit 36A, and both a westbound and eastbound lane are slated to be closed at South Oyster Bay Road or Exit 36 in the Syosset area, every weeknight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Exceptions will be the Friday and Monday of Labor Day weekend.

The program, designed to relieve traffic through the area to make way for the Department of Transportation's motorist safety improvement project, will continue through September, officials said.

The project will extend the northbound entrance ramp at Route 135 to the westbound Northern State Parkway as well as the South Oyster Bay Road southbound entrance ramp leading to the westbound Northern State, and the South Oyster Bay northbound entrance ramp to eastbound Northern State, officials said.

The three sites are among 15 slated for improvement under the $4.8 million project.

Officials said that motorists will be informed of the closings by road signs and drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes, such as the Long Island Expressway.
