State Department of Transportation officials announced Tuesday that one lane on a segment of the Southern State Parkway in Nassau will be closed during late night and early morning travel Sundays through Thursdays for several weeks, to facilitate construction.

The work started on March 22.

One lane of eastbound traffic in the vicinity of Exit 19 at Peninsula Boulevard in Hempstead may be closed between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. and one lane of westbound traffic between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Officials said that the conditions will be in effect nightly for about a week and then intermittently as officials deem necessary for about eight weeks.

The program, which is already underway, is part of the effort to extend entrance ramps at Peninsula Boulevard to eastbound and westbound lanes of the road. It is one of 19 components of the state Department of Transportation's $4 million motorist safety improvement project.

For real-time travel information, officials said, motorists may call 511 or visit www.511NY.org or get information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on mobile devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi.
