Merrick woman charged in Freeport hit-and-run death

A Merrick woman has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident Saturday after she struck and killed an unidentified male pedestrian who was crossing Sunrise Highway in Freeport, Nassau County police said.
Stephanie Beeker, 66, of 12 Van Roo Ave., was held on $20,000 bond or $10,000 cash bail at her arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
She is due back in court Wednesday.
According to detectives, the accident occurred at 11 p.m., as the pedestrian was crossing Sunrise Highway west of Buffalo Avenue from north to south.
He was struck by Beeker as she was driving east in a gray Nissan Altima, police said, and she continued to travel east on Sunrise Highway and did not stop.
The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead at 11:32 p.m. by emergency room staff.
After an investigation, detectives arrested Beeker an hour later in Baldwin.
No further details were immediately available.
