Steven Giacobello fatally hit by vehicle in Oyster Bay

A Town of Oyster Bay highway department worker was struck and killed while on duty by a passing motorist in downtown Oyster Bay Monday, authorities said.

Steven Giacobello, 45, of Westbury, had emptied garbage into the back of truck and was walking to the driver's seat when he was struck by a 2007 Mini Cooper driven by a Bayville woman, authorities said.

The unidentified woman, 25, stopped immediately after she struck Giacobello, police said. Speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash, which police deemed an accident. No charges have been filed.

Giacobello, who suffered severe head trauma, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

CSEA Local 881 president Jarvis Brown said Giacobello was a very good employee who worked for the town for more than 20 years. "It was an unfortunate accident. My condolences go out to the family," he said.
