Storm drain rupture closes Hempstead street

A section of North Franklin Street between Atlantic Avenue and West Columbia Street -- a main traffic artery in Hempstead -- is blocked so work can continue on a broken storm drain. A segment of a major thoroughfare in Hempstead Village, North Franklin Street, is expected to be closed to traffic into Monday night, police said after a storm drain ruptured.
The restricted area runs from Atlantic Avenue on the north and West Columbia Street on the south, Hempstead Police Department Lt. Francis McNamee said.
McNamee said the storm drain broke about midnight Saturday and that a repair crew has been working on the site.
The break came during a winter storm that brought snow across the Island all day Saturday and ultimately turned to rain.
