Suspect arrested in attempted iPhone thefts
He tried to steal an iPhone from a teen walking home from school Wednesday in Uniondale, Nassau County police said. But the teen got away and summoned a nearby police officer, who arrested the 17-year-old suspect.
But, police said, suspect Neil Compass Jr., 0f 743 Northgate Dr. in Uniondale, wasn't only charged with third-degree attempted for the incident Wednesday. A subsequent investigation linked Compass to another incident in Uniondale on March 22, police said.
He was charged with second-degree attempted robbery in that incident, which also involved a high school student.
Police said that in the incident Wednesday, Compass approached a 16-year-old boy walking home from Uniondale High School and attempted to steal an iPhone he was holding. The attempted robbery occurred at 3:30 p.m., police said.
But instead of handing over the cellphone, police said the teen struggled with Compass and managed to escape.
The victim then went to the grounds of the nearby A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility, where he spotted a Nassau First Precinct officer and reported the incident.
The officer then arrested Compass without incident, police said. No one was injured.
Compass is scheduled for arraignment on both charges Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
