A Mineola man robbed a CVS pharmacy near his home early Tuesday, Nassau County police said.

Peter Deverna, 57, of 211 Pershing Pkwy., is charged with first-degree robbery and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Third Squad detectives said Deverna went into a CVS at 17 E. Jericho Tpke. at about 1:05 a.m. and demanded money from a male cashier, 29.

Deverna left the store with an unspecified amount of cash and a witness saw him get on a bicycle at Washington Avenue and Roslyn Road, near the back of the store, police said.

The witness then told a police officer who had responded to the robbery call about a man on a bicycle.

Third Squad detectives and Third Precinct officers investigated, and the defendant was arrested at his home without incident, police said.

Deverna's residence, according to online maps, is about a half-mile from the store.
