Suspect tries to run, bike from police
A Roosevelt man allegedly ditched a stolen car and then a stolen bicycle Monday before Nassau County police caught him trying to hide at a North Merrick home, according to First Squad detectives.
First Precinct officers in a patrol car with a licence-plate reader saw a stolen car on Lakeside Avenue in North Merrick at about 3:29 p.m., according to a report.
Police followed the car and noticed several traffic violations before pulling it over near Camp Avenue and Meadowbrook Road, they said.
The driver, Ahmad T. Raye, 19, of Bainbridge Street, ran away and officers followed in pursuit.
Raye swiped a bike from a yard and pedaled down Washington Avenue, police said. He jumped off the bike, ran along Meadowbrook Parkway and then entered a residence on Sumner Avenue.
Police arrested Raye at the Sumner Avenue home. Residents there told police they did not know Raye.
Raye is charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, petty larceny and several vehicle and traffic violations. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
