Suspects sought in sneaker robbery
Police are searching for two robbers, believed to be in their teens, who said they had a gun -- and stole a pair of sneakers from a 14-year-old in Baldwin.
The theft occurred early Tuesday evening inside a Dunkin' Donuts on Atlantic Avenue, Nassau County police said.
The incident began, police said, when the 14-year-old posted a note on Facebook saying he wanted to sell a pair of Nike sneakers. He agreed to meet at the doughnut shop, police said, but once there the other teens said they had a gun and demanded he turn over the Nikes.
The 14-year-old tossed the sneakers over a counter, police said. But, police said, the robbers grabbed them anyway and fled on foot.
No one was injured in the incident, which occurred at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said no gun was displayed during the incident.
The first suspect is believed to be between 16 and 18 years old with a thin build and, police said, he was wearing a gray Adidas sweatsuit. The second suspect is believed to be in his late teens with a medium build and, police said, he was wearing black jeans and a black pea coat with a red hood. He had tattoos on his hands and arms -- and a tattoo of "a screaming mouth" on his neck, police said.
Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
All calls will remain confidential, police said.
