A sport utility vehicle crashed through a fence and plunged into the icy waters of Newbridge Pond early Thursday morning in Wantagh, police and fire officials said.

The driver of the Mercury Mariner declined medical attention at the scene after officials said that driver, whose identity was not released, apparently fell asleep while driving on Park Avenue near Old Mill Road at about 1:50 a.m. It was unclear how the driver got out of the partially submerged SUV.

No charges were filed.

A heavy duty tow truck was called to the scene and pulled the dark-colored SUV from the shallow water of the pond.
