Syosset man dies after Monday crash in Jericho

A 73-year-old Syosset man died Monday morning after a multivehicle accident in Jericho, Nassau County Police said.

Medhat Sami was pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Center, where he was taken after the car he was driving, a 2011 Infiniti, was struck from behind, police said. Sami was stopped for a traffic signal on Jericho Turnpike at Olde Hamlet Drive when he was rear-ended at 9:57 a.m. by a westbound 2013 Mercedes-Benz, driven by a 72-year-old man, police said.

Sami's car went on to rear-end a 1999 Ford van driven by a 70-year-old man who was also stopped at the light and who suffered no injuries, police said.

The Mercedes driver, who suffered neck pain and hand lacerations, was taken to a hospital by the Jericho Fire Department, which also took Sami to the hospital, police said.

Police said that no criminality was involved and that the vehicles involved were being inspected for brake and safety issues.

Also, as firefighters, police ambulances and officers rescued the victims, two drivers crashed into each other as they headed east on Jericho Turnpike while looking at the accident, the Jericho Fire Department said. They were not seriously injured, a fire official said.
